Karapatan and Bayan raise alarm on attacks vs activists via series of robberies, surveillance

Human rights group Karapatan and umbrella group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN), together with members and leaders of several organizations today condemned in strongest terms the series of attacks against people’s organizations and partylist groups, disguised as break-ins and robberies. The groups decried what they described as the “rising and systematic forms of state repression and harassment of government critics”. They said that the recent incidents were made to appear as common crimes but were actually targeted attacks on activists and their organizations.

Ako ay lubos na nakikiisa sa inyo, sa pamilya ng mga biktima ng pagdukot at sapilitang pagkawala, at sa inyong makatarungang paglaban para kamtin ang hustiya sa nawawala ninyong mga kamag-anak.

Malapit sa aking puso ang DESAPARECIDOS. Muling binuhay nito ang tunay na diwa at paninindigan ng isang organisasyong lumalaban upang mabigyan ng katarungan ang mga biktima ng pagdukot at sapilitang pagkawala at masagot ang katanungan ng mga pamilya hinggil sa sinapit ng kanilang nawawalang kamag-anak.

On the killing of Dutch NGO worker and missionary Willem Geertman

Bayan condemns in the strongest terms the killing today of Dutch NGO worker and missionary Willem Geertman. Based on initial reports from Bayan Central Luzon, he was shot in front of his office between 12:20-1pm. An independent investigation by Bayan CL is still ongoing and we are awaiting the full report on the circumstances of Geertman’s death.

BAYAN Europe discussed pressing issues in the Philippines

BAYAN Europe in cooperation with several Filipino organizations in the Netherlands organized a public forum on the Philippine national situation and on the country’s human rights situation. BAYAN secretary general Renato Reyes Jr. gave an input on the national situation as well as encouraged organizations which participated in the forum to be part of the BAYAN Europe formation. Members of the Philippine UPR Watch provided information on the deteriorating human rights record of Pres. Benigno Aquino III.
