BAYAN Europe strongly condemns the killing of pregnant Blaan woman, Juvy Capion and her two sons, aged 8 and 13, by elements of the Philippine Army’s 27th Infantry Battalion in the Tampakan Gold project mining area of XStrata’s Sagittarious Mines Inc. (SMI) in Bong Mal South Cotabato.
The labors of Filipino household help in the country and abroad contribute more to the economy than mineral extraction, says research group IBON. This underscores how the mining industry’s contribution to the economy should not only be in terms of the value of minerals produced, but also how these should be used to develop Filipino industry.

Increased mining will not accelerate economic growth and development if there is no domestic industrial base. The government should not just seek an increased share of mining firms’ revenues from extracting raw materials but more importantly should actively create the conditions for the Philippines to get the larger benefits from manufacturing intermediate and final industrial goods. These benefits include much more jobs than mining will ever create, domestic incomes and profits, and Filipino science and technology, said IBON.
